Die Berühmtheit Mark Twains beruht nicht zuletzt auf der starken Wirkung, die in aller Welt Tom Sawyers Abenteuer ausübten. Die Geschichten erzählen vom Tatendrang amerikanischer Jungen, die sich in allem möglichen Unfug, in Streichen und ernsthaften Unternehmungen Bahn bricht, von kindlichen Liebesabenteuern und Rivalitätskämpfen bis zur Entlarvung eines Mörders und der erfolgreichen Suche nach einem Schatz. Mark Twain ruft damit seine eigene Jugend, aber auch "Amerikas glückliche Kindheit" in Erinnerung, als der mittlere Westen noch vorwiegend Agraland war.
