Thomas Morus hat seine Utopia als politisch denkender und handelnder Mensch geschrieben, mit kritischem Blick auf die realen gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Verhältnisse . Die eigentliche Utopia, also das zweite Buch, entstand vor dem ersten, der Kritik an den gesellschaftlichen Zuständen des damaligen Englands . Letztere hatte Morus ja deutlich vor Augen . So wundert es nicht, daß er den ersten Teil innerhalb weniger Tage niedergeschrieben haben soll . Die Verhältnisse damals und heute lassen erstaunlich viele Parallelen erkennen : rasch aufeinander folgende Krisen, die den Fortbestand der 〈alten〉 Welt in Frage stellen, die politischen Gewalten im Inneren wie im Äußeren in ihren wechselseitigen Verflechtungen, die Auflösung wirtschaftlich-sozialer Strukturen wie die fast aller geistig-moralischer Lebensgrundlagen sind Kennzeichen einer für alle Lebensbereiche zutreffenden Orientierungslosigkeit .

Thomas Morus wäre mißverstanden, wollte man in seiner Utopia nur ein Spiel humanistischer Phantasie sehen . Es war der Politiker Morus, der gehört werden, der kommende Minister, der sein Programm bekannt machen wollte, Ursachen und Lösungsansätze für den reformbedürftigen Staat . Ihm schwebte das Ideal einer kommunistisch orientierten Gesellschaftsordnung und einer an Geist und Bildung ausgerichteten Lebensführung vor . Thomus Morus wurde 1477 oder 1478 in London geboren .
