Der Autor (vgl. auch "Caesar und die Fäden der Macht", BA 8/06) schildert die Pest. Der Erzählteil präsentiert die Geschichte des Jugendlichen Sebastian, dessen Vater, ein Arzt, bei der Bekämpfung eines Pestausbruchs in einer mittelalterlichen Stadt stirbt. Sebastian stellt sich schützend vor Juden, denen die Schuld an der Seuche gegeben wird, und wird von Mönchen gerettet. Die Sachkapitel sind in den Erzählteil eingeschoben und gehen verständlich auf die Entstehung der Seuche und ihre vermuteten, sowie die heute bekannten Ursachen ein. Daneben behandeln sie die mittelalterliche Medizin und die Folgen der Seuche (Endzeitvorstellungen, Geißler, Pogrome). Leider ist die Erzählung etwas langweilig und illustriert v.a. den Sachteil. Die Illustrationen stammen von Klaus Puth (vgl. Venzke: "Gutenburg und das Geheimnis der schwarzen Kunst", Besprechung folgt). Das Thema interessiert Jugendliche und die Mischung aus Erzählung und Sachtexten hebt den Band von anderen Büchern zum Thema ab (vgl. "Die Pest", Gerstenberg Verlag, BA 5/06).
