Für seinen letzten Roman, zuerst 1947 im Aufbau-Verlag erschienen, diente Fallada ein Einzelfall, den er Gestapoakten entnommen hatte (im Anhang berichtet er darüber). Mit Postkarten, deren Texte gegen das Hitler-Regime gerichtet sind, versucht das Werkmeisterehepaar Quangel seinen privaten Widerstand, nachdem sie vom "Heldentod" ihres Sohnes erfahren haben. Das Ehepaar wird gefaßt, der Mann wird hingerichtet, die Frau stirbt bei einem Bombenangriff. Die ungeheure Detailfülle des Romans und die spannende Handlung geben ein lebendiges Bild jener Zeit; für junge Erwachsene in besonderem Maße als Verständnishilfe geeignet. Der westdeutsche Kinofilm mit H. Knef und C. Raddatz in den Hauptrollen traf die Atmosphäre weniger intensiv als der 3teilige DDR-Fernsehfilm (1970) mit E. Grube-Deister und E. Geschonnek. - Weiterhin (zuletzt BA 12/80, 30) breit empfohlen. (hjz)
