Content: "Broner, Lorenzoni, and Schmukler argue that emerging economies borrow short term due to the high risk premium charged by international capital markets on long-term debt. They first present a model where the debt maturity structure is the outcome of a risk-sharing problem between the government and bondholders. By issuing long-term debt, the government lowers the probability of a liquidity crisis, transferring risk to bondholders. In equilibrium, this risk is reflected in a higher risk premium and borrowing cost. Therefore, the government faces a tradeoff between safer long-term borrowing and cheaper short-term debt. Second, the authors construct a new database of sovereign bond prices and issuance. They show that emerging economies pay a positive term premium (a higher risk premium on long-term bonds than on short-term bonds). During crises, the term premium increases, with issuance shifting toward shorter maturities. This suggests that changes in bondholders' risk aversion are important to understand emerging market crises. This paper--a product of the Investment Climate Team, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to understand financial markets in emerging economies"--World Bank web site

Content: This collection of 7 documents is about the Bakairi, a Carib-speaking group living on Upper Xingu River in the state of Mato Grosso in south central Brazil. The German explorer Steinen wrote the earliest accounts of the Bakairi based on his one-month stay with them during his 1884 trip down the Xingu river and his travels among the tribes located along the Kulisehu River, in the Upper Xingu area in 1887. Abreu wrote an early account of Bakairi language, mythology, and religion based on 1892 Portuguese texts. Schmidt includes the history of the Bakairi subsequent to Steinen's expedition and up to the year 1927. During this period of time, numerous socio-political and cultural changes took place among the Bacairi. He describes three different Bacairi groups: the Eastern, Western, and Xinguanos. Altenfelder Silva describes the culture of the Bakairi Indians of Mato Grosso circa 1940 including their technology, kinship terminology, pantheon, ceremonies, shamanism, and the series of ritualistic seclusions, or uanki, that occur at intervals during the life cycle. Oberg's account is based on his fieldwork among the people living on the Government Indian Post on the Rio Paranatinga during June 1947. It should be noted that the information presented in this source, obtained primarily from informants, relates to an earlier period in Bacairi history (ca. 1907) when they lived on the Rio Kuliseu. Data presented pertain to settlement patterns, subsistence activities, house types, furniture, language, culture history and early European contacts, population, dress and personal ornaments, organization of labor, social organization, the life cycle, puberty rites, marriage, burial, shamanism, games, ceremonialism and mythology

Content: Before they were largely decimated and dispersed by the effects of European colonization, Arawak-speaking peoples were the most widespread language family in Latin America and the Caribbean, and they were the first people Columbus encountered in the Americas. This volume examines social structures, political hierarchies, rituals, religious movements, gender relations, and linguistic variations through historical perspectives to document sociocultural diversity across the diffused Arawakan diaspora.

Content: This book is a narrative study of four main discourses of national identity in Spain, with a special focus on Catalonia as disseminated in the Spanish press in the period between 1993-1996. The narrative analysis of the discourses of national identity is contained within two sections. The first deals with Spanish press coverage of the 1994 USA Football World Cup. The second section studies the process of negotiation towards a political pact between Partido Popular and Convergència I Unió after the 1996 general election. This study is not confined to the identification and description of discursive elements intended to shape identities, but deals heavily with the symbolic struggle between different ideological agents. The narrative approach and systematic application to two particular and very concrete cases makes this work unique in its field. This book would be useful as a reference text for courses not only on Contemporary Spain, but also on the wider field of Cultural Studies and Media Studies. However, the issues dealt with and the style in which it is written, make it of interest to a wider and not necessarily academic audience
