Content: Der vorliegende Band versteht sich als ein Versuch, der forschungsgeschichtlichen ‚Verteufelung des Teufels‘ zu begegnen. Er geht von der Hypothese aus, dass die etablierte, primär theologisch-moralische Lesart dieser paradigmatischen Figur der Vormoderne noch immer den Blick auf ihre schöpferischen Eigenschaften verstellt, die jedoch produktiv auf ästhetische Form und Sinnstiftung literarischer Texte einwirken können.Die Einzelstudien verfolgen das Ziel, die ästhetische Dynamik, die sich rund um die Teufelsfigur entfaltet, in ihrer Komplexität zu erfassen; dabei fokussieren sie folgende Fragen: Wozu ermächtigt der Einsatz einer Teufelsfigur im Text? Worin unterscheiden sich sein Aktionsfeld, seine Handlungsweise und kommunikative Kompetenz von denjenigen anderer Figuren? Welcher ästhetische Möglichkeitsraum eröffnet sich um die diabolische Figur herum, aus dem literarische Texte ihre Gestaltungs-, Deutungs- und auch Sinnbildungspotentiale schöpfen können? Die versammelten Beiträge interessieren sich für eben diese produktiven Eigenschaften, die als des Teufels poietische Kraft verstanden werden – sowohl im weiteren Sinne als Form des herstellenden Handelns als auch im engeren Sinne als Dichtung.

The collection is designed around three thematic strands, based on the lifecycle of handwritten documents and manuscripts and printed books: first, production of paper, second production of books and manuscripts and third, trade and exchange, and ownership of manuscripts and books. Content: The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789-1886). The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland's ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies - in contrast to France's strong presence and binding force - is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity. Content: The open access book provides an analysis of human actors and their capacity to explore and conceptualise their own agency by being curious, gathering knowledge, and shaping identities in their travel reflections on Asia. Thus, the actors open windows across time to present a profound overview of diverse descriptions and constructions of Asia. The authors demonstrate that international and transnational history contributes to and benefits from analyses of national and local contexts that in turn enrich our understanding of transcultural encounters and experiences across time. The book proposes an actor-centred contextual approach to travel writing to recount meaningful constructions of Asia's physical, political and spiritual landscapes. It offers comparative reflections on the patterns of encounter across Eurasia, where from the late medieval period an idea of civilisation was transculturally shared yet also constantly questioned and reframed.
