Abstract:
Assessment of load capacity and fatigue safety of the Kaiserleibrücke across the Main – example of an object‐related application of the recalculation guideline The Kaiserleibrücke, which was completed in 1964 as a great example of post‐war bridge construction, crosses as A 661 motorway the river Main. The double arch bridge with a span of 220 m is the road bridge with the largest span in Hesse. A realistic assessment was possible primarily on the basis of structural health monitoring at level 3 according recalculation guideline. On the one hand, this enabled the calculation model to be optimized and, on the basis of the measured loads and stresses, the characteristic values for calculation of load capacity and stress collectives for calculation of fatigue safety could also be determined on an object‐related basis. In conclusion, after marginal reinforcement measures, the Kaiserleibrücke can be preserved for a few decades under heavy traffic with approximately current count and weight. The preservation of this very aesthetic arch bridge is not only a contribution to building culture, it also allows the best possible saving of resources.
