Situated at the disciplinary boundary between prehistory and history, this book presents a new synthesis of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Greece, from the rise and fall of Mycenaean civilization, through the "Dark Age," and up to the emergence of city-states in the Archaic period. This period saw the growth and decline of varied political systems and the development of networks that would eventually expand to nearly all shores of the Middle Sea. Alex R. Knodell argues that in order to understand how ancient Greece changed over time, one must analyze how Greek societies constituted and reconstituted themselves across multiple scales, from the local to the regional to the Mediterranean. Knodell employs innovative network and spatial analyses to understand the regional diversity and connectivity that drove the growth of early Greek polities. As a groundbreaking study of landscape, interaction, and sociopolitical change, Societies in Transition in Early Greece systematically bridges the divide between the Mycenaean period and the Archaic Greek world to shed new light on an often-overlooked period of world history.

Content: "This book is an ethnographic endeavor that explores age identity in the everyday A'uwe (Xavante) experiences at Pimentel Barbosa and Etenhiritipa villages, Central Brazil. It serves as an account of the formal and informal properties of the A'uwe life cycle that contribute to social identity, well-being, health, and environmental engagement. Welch examines the interplay between sociality and environmental relations, emphasizing the distinctiveness of the savanna environment and changing patterns in health conditions. Through environmental analyses, discussion of uses of fire, and the sensitive portrayals of individuals and events, the book develops arguments about how A'uwe understand well-being. The author uses observations from his many years living and working in A'uwe communities to create a portrait of contemporary Amazonian indigenous people and their environmental and social relations. This account is an argument for an understanding of A'uwe social organization as fundamentally plural, with age statuses and other aspects of social identity being numerous, simultaneous, interdependent, and contingent. The book aspires to be the new ethnographic go-to reference for Xavante society and cultural studies of groups in the Gê language family"--

Content: Julián Romero, Sancho Dávila, Cristóbal de Mondragón, and Francisco de Valdes were prominent Spanish military commanders during the first decade of the Revolt in the Low Countries (1567-1577). Occupying key positions in this conflict, they featured as central characters in various war narratives and episodical descriptions of the events they were involved in, ranging from chronicles, poems, theatre plays, engravings, and songs to news pamphlets. To this day, they still figure as protagonists of historical novels: brave heroes in some, cruel oppressors in others. Yet personal, first-hand accounts also exist. Archival research into the letters written by these commanders now makes it possible to include their perspectives and the way they describe their own experiences. Looking through the eyes of four Spanish commanders, 'Protagonists of War' provides the reader with an alternative reading of the Revolt, contrasting the subjective experiences of these protagonists with fictionalised perceptions.

Content: This study reassesses the poetry of Paul Fleming (1609-1640) in the context of its own literary, historical, and social background. The four chapters focus initially on generic and historical context. The study of selected texts leads to more general considerations of the sources and significance of certain major themes. A number of poems by Fleming and poets contemporary with him uncovered in the twentieth century are evaluated here for the first time. The result is a substantially revised view of Fleming's poetic development. Fleming is shown to have been a more complex and wide-ranging poet than was conventionally thought, one whose debt to Renaissance literary traditions has been underestimated.
