Content: The book deals with novel aspects and perspectives in functionally graded materials (FGMs), which are advanced engineering materials designed for a specific performance or function with spatial gradation in structure and/or composition. The contributions mainly focus on numerical simulations of mechanical properties and the behavior of FGMs and FGM structures. Several advancements in numerical simulations that are particularly useful for investigations on FGMs have been proposed and demonstrated in this Special Issue. Such proposed approaches provide incisive methods to explore and predict the mechanical and structural characteristics of FGMs subjected to thermoelectromechanical loadings under various boundary and environmental conditions. The contributions have resulted in enhanced activity regarding the prediction of FGM properties and global structural responses, which are of great importance when considering the potential applications of FGM structures. Furthermore, the presented scientific scope is, in some way, an answer to the continuous demand for FGM structures, and opens new perspectives for their practical use.

Content: This paper uses a novel variant of identification through hetroscedacity to estimate spillovers across U.S., Euro area, Japanese, and UK government bond and equity markets in a vector autoregression. The results suggest that U.S. financial shocks reverberate around the world much more strongly than shocks from other regions, including the Euro area, while inward spillovers to the U.S. from elsewhere are minimal. There is also evidence of two-way spillovers between the UK and Euro area financial markets and spillovers from Europe to Japan. The results also suggest that the uncertainty about the direction of causality of contemporaneous correlations—an issue that other techniques cannot tackle—is the dominant source of uncertainty in the estimated impulse response functions.

Content: This book discusses the latest advances and applications in geospatial technologies and earth resources for mine surveying and civil engineering. It also discusses mineral resources management and assesses many techniques such as unmanned aerial vehicles/drones, ground-penetrating radar, geographic information system (GIS) and GIS-based machine learning.   The book gathers the proceedings of the International Conference on Geo-Spatial Technologies and Earth Resources (GTER 2017), which was co-organized by the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) and the International Society for Mine Surveying (ISM) and held in Hanoi, Vietnam, on October 5–6, 2017.   GTER 2017 is technically co-sponsored by the Vietnam Mining Science and Technology Association (VMST), Vietnam Association of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing (VGCR), Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (VINACOMIN), and the Dong Bac Corporation (NECO). The event is intended to bring together experts, researchers, engineers, and policymakers to discuss and exchange their knowledges and experiences with modern geospatial technologies, recent advances in mining and tunneling, and the geological and earth sciences.   Given its breadth of coverage, the book will appeal to scientists in the field as well as professionals interested in related technological applications.
