Content: A master of intensely emotional human dramas, director Lee Chang-dong is a luminary of contemporary Korean cinema, and his place on the international stage was cemented by this stirring and unpredictable work examining grief and deliverance. An effortless mix of lightness and uncompromising darkness, Secret Sunshine (Miryang) stars Cannes best actress winner Jeon Do-yeon as a widowed piano teacher who moves with her young son from Seoul to her late husband's provincial hometown for a fresh start. Content: The earliest film in the collection, Goryeojang features superb B&W lensing and outstanding performances. A woman arrives with her sole surviving son (Guryong) to a village in order to marry a man with ten sons by four previous marriages (yes, I'm not making this up!). The village is beset by recurring famines and has an unfortunate tradition of sending its elderly to the Sacred Peak to die (apparently, abstinence was not an option). The village shaman, scorned by the groom, places a curse on his ten sons. Shortly after their wedding, the sons play a cruel trick on Guryong and he is maimed for life. The woman leaves her husband to live with her son on a plot of land he has given her. The years go by, and the bitter rivalry between the ten sons intensifies when they learn of Guryong's impending wedding. Shortly after his wedding, tragedy strikes and he is alone again with his aging mother. Many more years pass when a prolonged drought pits the brothers, who own the sole well in the village, against Guryong, who has been using his supply of food to extort land from all the villagers. Content: This story is a remake of Lee Man-hee's Late Autumn, which no longer exists. When we first encounter Hyo-soon (Kim Ji-mi), she is boarding the train for her hometown to meet the only man she has ever loved, a meeting we are told will never take place. Through flashbacks, we learn that while serving time in prison for unpremeditated murder, Hyo-soon was allowed by a compassionate parole officer (Park Jeong-ja) to make the very same journey several years earlier. Along the way, the two women are greeted by a young man (Lee Jeong-gil) who offers them a lunch box from the train station, a gesture that would later hold great significance for Hyo-soon. The woman had until then experienced nothing but grief at the hands of men, having been raped several times. Her loss of faith in humanity, compounded by the loss of her mother, left her with little reason to live, and she had already made repeated attempts to take her own life. The chance meeting of the young man restored her will to live, and the two lovers vowed to meet again after her release from prison in two years. (Jon Pais, Twitch)

Content: Chihwaseon has all the makings of the classic Im Kwon-taek historical drama: fantastic scenery and superb cinematography (by veteran Jung Il-sung). Extremely realistic costumes, impressive attention to detail in the recreation of the period, both visually and in terms of cultural setting. It's an incredible spectacle, no doubt. But it lacks something: a soul. Retelling the life of infamous Chosun painter Jang Seung-ub (Choi Min-shik), director Im ambitiously covers 50 years of one of the most turbulent periods in Korean history, trying to develop the life one of the most peculiar painters of the era. (Korean Film Weekly)
Content: Extras without subtitles: Making of documentary (the various stages of production, 70 min.). Telecine-work (cinematographer Jung Il-sung works with the technician to change the look of the film before the transfer to DVD, 20 min.). C.G.I. (computer generated imaging, divided into 6 sections: a before/after comparison of the CG scenes with multi-angle function). Interview with director Im Kwon-taek, cinematographer Jung Il-sung and producer Lee Tae-won (30 min.). Cannes Film Festival (12 min.). Image Gallery: 1. 'Painting' section which shows all the original paintings in the film. Professor Kim Seon-doo analyzes a few of Jang's paintings, along with the Sohn Ye-jin portrait. 2. Photos from the shooting. 3. Stills from the film. 4 and 5. Sketches and plans for the open set.

Content: A young man in the Yi Dynasty, heir to royalty, is "given" a woman to have his child. However, the two become romantically involved, which poses problems due to their class differences. "Surrogate Mother is set in the Joseon Dynasty. Shin Sang-gyu, the firstborn son in a distinguished family, and his wife Yun (Bang Hee) fail to produce an offspring. After much deliberation, his mother (Han Eun-jin) and his uncle Shin Chi-ho (Yoon Yang-ha) decide to bring in a woman to receive Sang-gyu's seed and give birth to an heir. Shin Chi-ho personally seeks out a village inhabited by women known to perform such surrogate services, and chooses Ok-nyeo (Kang Soo-yeon), the daughter of a former surrogate mother named Pil-nyeo (Kim Hyeong-ja), for his nephew. On the night of the consummation, Sang-gyu is captivated by Ok-nyeo's beauty and becomes enamored of her, to the intense jealousyof his wife Yun. When Ok-nyeo shows signs of being with child, the entire household exalts her. Even Ok-nyeo forgets her place for a while and comes genuinely to love Sang-gyu. Pil-nyeo looks back on her own past and remonstrates with her daughter, but Ok-nyeo refuses to listen. The moment Ok-nyeo gives birth to her son, he is placed in the arms of Sang-gyu's wife Yun. The Shin family rejoices, but Ok-nyeo is ordered to leave the house that very night, without ever having seen her son's face. One year later, Ok-nyeo rebels against the inhuman tradition of her time by hanging herself outside the house where her son lives." (KOFA)
