Yumiko, eine 25jährige Frau aus Osaka, hei-ratet mit Ikuo jenen Mann, den sie als Reinkar-nation ihrer Grossmutter wahrnimmt. Sie war gerade zwölf Jahre alt, als diese sich zum Sterben an den Ort ihrer Kindheit aufmachte, und Yumiko sie nicht aufhalten konnte. Zusammen mit Ikuo hat sie einen Sohn, der gerade drei Monate alt ist, als gemeldet wird, dass der Vater sich unter einen Vorortszug gestürzt hätte. Zurück bleibt ein Schuh und das Glöcklein, das die Frau ihrem Geliebten als Schlüsselanhänger geschenkt hatte. Über die Vermittlung einer Nachbarin findet Yumiko fünf Jahre später einen anderen Mann, der seinerseits die Frau verloren hat und mit seiner kleinen Tochter in jenem Fischerdorf am Meer lebt. Kore-Eda setzt diesen spärlichen Handlungsfaden in meditativ wirkende Bilder um, in denen die Menschen sich immer wieder in Durchgängen befinden, aus dem Dunkeln auf ein Licht zustreben, wo eine Farbe dominiert: Das Blau. Einem Subplot gleich setzt er den Ton ein, schafft sowohl mit der Musik seines taiwanesischen Komponisten als auch mit ganz alltäglichen Geräuschen Raum. Wie das Licht im Bild scheint der Glocken-Klang im Ton eine Konstante zu schaffen und die Betrachtenden zu führen. Walter Ruggle (Trigon-Film)
