Als der Erste Weltkrieg ausbricht, melden sich nicht nur Tausende freiwillig für die Armee, auch Menschen, die den Krieg nicht wollen, werden eingezogen, darunter der Berliner Tenor Nikolaus Sprink, der sich schweren Herzens von seiner Verlobten trennt, der dänischen Sopranistin Anna Sörensen. Im Schützengraben an der Westfront untersteht er einem strengen General, der Kunst für Firlefanz hält. Deutsche, französische und schottische Soldaten halten dort die Stellung. Anna Sörensen schafft es, den Kronprinz Wilhelm von Preußen zu einem Konzertabend am Heiligabend an der Westfront zu überreden, mit dem Hintergedanken, Sprenk dort zu treffen, der als Tenor den Abend verschönen soll. Der Plan gelingt, aber Sprenk will auch für seine Kameraden singen und in der Heiligen Nacht gibt es eine Art Waffenstillstand zwischen den verfeindeten Truppen, um gemeinsam Weihnachten feiern. Ń Christian Carion erzählt von einem kleinen Wunder in Zeiten des Krieges, das so oder ähnlich stattgefunden haben soll. Auch wenn manchmal Kitsch durchschimmert, beeindruckt das Drama in seiner Rigorosität und führt den Wahnsinn des Krieges ad absurdum, größer könnten die Kontraste zwischen sinnlosem Kampf und dem Wunsch nach Frieden auf Erden nicht sein. Zwar wirken Diane Krüger und Benno Fürmann als Opernsänger/innen mit ihrem Playback nicht gerade überzeugend, aber das macht Daniel Brühl als General wett. In dieser französisch-deutschen Koproduktion, die von Frankreich für den Auslands-Oscar eingereicht wurde, dominiert für einen kurzen Moment das Prinzip Hoffnung und das gibt Zuversicht.
