Content: Almost a century after its release, THE BIRTH OF A NATION remains one of the most controversial films ever made... a landmark achievement that continues to fascinate and enrage audiences. It is the epic story of two families, one northern and one southern, during and after the Civil War. D.W. Griffith's masterful direction combines brilliant battle scenes and tender romance with a vicious portrayal of African Americans. It was the greatest feature-length blockbuster yet to be produced in the United States, and the first to be shown in the White House. After seeing the film, President Woodrow Wilson declared it was "like writing history with lightning!" In cities and states across the country, the film energized the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which tried to have the film banned, or at least the most gruesome scenes censored. The film also inspired African Americans to move into filmmaking as a way to offer alternative images and stories. (Kino)

Grundbestand. (Zwischentitel: GB; Untertitel: D; Booklet, 40 S.) (EKZ)
Content: Extras: Three Hours That Shook the World: Observations on Intolerance (1080p; 19:02) is an interview with Kevin Brownlow which includes occasional clips and stills from the film. He has a ton of fascinating anecdotes about the film and its participants, including a really funny story involving David Shepard, another vaunted name in silent film, and Intolerance's editor, James Smith. Content: 2015 marks the centenary of D W Griffith's masterful silent epic, The Birth of a Nation, presented here in a stunning new restoration. A cinematic milestone tells of two families during and after the American Civil War, recalling an era of divided loyalties and struggle for control over the Southern states. Condemned for its stereotyping of African Americans and its portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan as heroes, Griffith's film is also revered for its grand scale and revolutionary use of film technique. The original 1915 score was adapted and conducted by John Lanchbery

Content: The Night of the Hunter̶incredibly, the only film the great actor Charles Laughton ever directed̶is truly a stand-alone masterwork. A horror movie with qualities of a Grimm fairy tale, it stars a sublimely sinister Robert Mitchum as a traveling preacher named Harry Powell (he of the tattooed knuckles), whose nefarious motives for marrying a fragile widow, played by Shelley Winters, are uncovered by her terrified young children. Graced by images of eerie beauty and a sneaky sense of humor, this ethereal, expressionistic American classic̶also featuring the contributions of actress Lillian Gish and writer James Agee̶is cinema̷s most eccentric rendering of the battle between good and evil. (Criterion)
