Das Härten der Oberflächen von Konstruktionsteilen aus Stahl hat sich heute auf fast allen Gebieten des Maschinen-, Motoren-und Gerätebaues in großem Umfang eingeführt. Es spielt im Rahmen der eigenschaftsverbessernden Warmbehandlungsvorgänge beim Stahl insofern eine wichtige Rolle, als es damit gelingt, Werkstücken an ihrer Oberfläche günstige Verschleißeigenschaften zu geben, ohne daß sie durch und durch gehärtet zu werden brauchen. Auch besitzen an der Oberfläche gehärtete Bauteile eine größere Festigkeit gegenüber schwingender Dauerbeanspruchung. Das vorliegende Buch will in erster Linie Konstrukteure und Betriebsingenienre in konzentrierter Form über die einzelnen Oberflächenhärteverfahren und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Eigenschaften der Konstruktionsteile unterrichten. Neben den in Frage kommenden Werkstoffen werden diejenigen Überlegungen aufgezeigt, die zur Festsetzung aller erforderlichen technischen Angaben führen. Hierbei wird auch auf die inneren werkstofflichen und festigkeitsmäßigen Vorgänge eingegangen, soweit sie zu einem tieferen Verständnis der Auswirkung einzelner Maßnahmen notwendig sind. Denn gerade die Unsicherheit in der Beantwortung der auftretenden Werkstoff- und Festigkeitsfragen hat neben weit verbreiteten irrtümlichen Anschauungen über die Anwendungsbereiche und die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten der Oberflächenhärtung oft zu Maßnahmen geführt, die genau das Gegenteil des Gewünschten zur Folge hatten
