Content: Surveys show that our growing concern over protecting the environment is accompanied by a diminishing sense of human contact with nature. Many people have little commonsense knowledge about nature - are unable, for example, to identify local plants and trees or describe how these plants and animals interact. Researchers report dwindling knowledge of nature even in smaller, nonindustrialized societies. In The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature, Scott Atran and Douglas Medin trace the cognitive consequences of this loss of knowledge. Drawing on nearly two decades of cross-cultural and developmental research, they examine the relationship between how people think about the natural world and how they act on it and how these two phenomena are affected by cultural differences. These studies, which involve a series of targeted comparisons among cultural groups living in the same environment and engaged in the same activities, reveal critical universal aspects of mind as well as equally critical cultural differences. Atran and Medin find that, despite a base of universal processes, the cultural differences in understandings of nature are associated with significant differences in environmental decision making as well as intergroup conflict and stereotyping stemming from these differences. The book includes two intensive case studies, one focusing on agro-forestry among Maya Indians and Spanish speakers in Mexico and Guatemala and the other on resource conflict between Native-American and European-American fishermen in Wisconsin. The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature offers new perspectives on general theories of human categorization, reasoning, decision making, and cognitive development.

Content: The Ticuna Collection documents, all of them in English, cover cultural, economic and environmental information circa 1941 to 1995. Two of these documents are produced by Curt Nimuendaju, a German anthropologist who conducted ethnographic fieldwork among the Ticuna in 1935 and 1941-1942 on behalf of University of California. The documents vary in size, and coverage. One is a larger monograph describing economic activities, aspects of material culture, personality character and social life, social organization (largely focusing on clans and moieties), art, religion and magic. The other is a brief over view of Ticuna culture originally published in the Handbook of South American Indians. Together, these works provide a well rounded first hand account of Ticuna culture and society as observed by the author. The document by Hammond, Dolman and Watkinson discusses the ways the Ticuna adaptively transformed their traditional swidden-fallow land use practices to make advantage of emerging market opportunities in timber and forest products

Content: The Yuki lived in northern Mendocino County, California and spoke a language, Yukian, that has no known relationship to other languages. The Yuki include the Coast Yuki, Yuki, and Huchnom. In the 1990s there were about 100 Yukis around Round Valley, California. The Yuki used to practice hunting, gathering, and fishing and the Round Valley supported a relatively dense population on the rich wild resources. However, the Round Valley land was much desired by European-American settlers and the Yuki were displaced and killed to free up the land. There are eighteen documents in this collection. A general introduction to the three main Yuki groups can be found in Kroeber's articles from the Handbook of Californian Indians
