Cover: "Lou Andreas-Salome, the woman who enraptured 19th century Europe's greatest minds, recounts her life to a young admirer. In her youth, she scandalized society by pursuing an education and living a life free from convention. She befriended philosophers Paul Ree and Friedrich Nietzsche, denying them both intimate relationship, to remain their equal. She became a published author and lecturer and meets the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who became one of her lovers, and with whom she exchanged letters for decades, while in a platonic marriage with another. In her maturity, she gains another admirer in Sigmund Freud, and with him, she helps to develop psychoanalysis and becomes its first female practitioner."
