Mit konsequent moderner Architektur prägte Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer als einer der erfolgreichsten Architekten der Wirtschaftswunderjahre nachhaltig das Baugeschehen der damaligen Bundesrepublik. Orientiert an den internationalen Entwicklungen in Skandinavien und den USA, setzte Kraemer auch als Hochschullehrer an der TH Braunschweig Maßstäbe für eine ganze Generation. Mit Mies van der Rohe - seinem expliziten Vorbild - verband ihn das Bekenntnis zur klaren Form in einer minimalisierten, gleichsam "klassischen" Architektursprache. Am architektonischen Werk Kraemers lassen sich beispielhaft rund fünfzig Jahre moderner Architektur in Deutschland nachvollziehen. Bauten wie die Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt- Hoechst, das Hochschulforum in Braunschweig, die Landeszentralbank in Düsseldorf oder der Umbau der Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel stehen beispielhaft für die außerordentliche Qualität des Oeuvres.
