Prominente Künstler haben oft ein Problem: Ihre Kunst wird durch ihr übergroßes Ego verdeckt. Ein Effekt, den vor allem die Publizistik herbeiführt und fortschreibt. Ai Weiwei ist ein relativ junges Beispiel für dieses Phänomen. Der kleine Band mit Gesprächsaufzeichnungen, die der Kurator Hans Ulrich Obrist dokumentiert hat, stellt den Künstler Ai Weiwei wieder ganz in den Vordergrund. Werkstattgespräche, die manchmal beiläufig und scheinbar ohne roten Faden verlaufen, die aber (vielleicht gerade darum) einen genauen Einblick in Gedanken und künstlerische Praxis des Künstlers geben. Da geht es um Architektur, um Nachhaltigkeit oder einen retrospektiven Blick auf Leben und Werk. Alle Interviews sind bereits veröffentlicht, ihre Zusammenführung macht aber Sinn und ermöglicht einen authentischen Blick auf den Künstler und seine Kunst. Das Buch ist eine gute Ergänzung zu dem ebenfalls neu erschienenen Band seiner Blog-Eintragungen "Macht Euch keine Illusionen über mich" (ID-A 33/11), bei dem es auch um Kunst, vor allem aber um die Situation in neuen China geht, mit seinen Brüchen und Widersprüchen.
