Content: Pension funds in some economies are used as a captive audience to channel capital at below market rates to government. This policy is only one tool in the financial repression toolkit, but it is receiving increased attention as governments around the world struggle to increase fiscal space and reduce their sovereign debt burden as they rebuild their economies after the pandemic. First, this paper provides an analysis of financial repression using pension funds from a historical perspective. It then assesses the welfare and distributional implications of this policy and distills lessons learned from a variety of advanced and emerging economies. The wide range of possible interventions and idiosyncratic country conditions make a general set of policy recommendations elusive, but the paper suggests four high-level principles that can help policymakers assess the costs and benefits of implementing policies that employ pension funds as a captive audience for financial repression. 1

Content: Migration in the Medieval Mediterranean argues that the cross-Mediterranean movement of peoples was a central aspect of the medieval world. Medieval people migrated in search of safety after regime change, secure life amongst coreligionists, and prosperous careers. This kind of travel between Muslim and Christian regions demonstrates the mutual influences, interconnections, and communications linking them, surpassing the differences between the two civilizations.

Series Statement: Routledge studies in human rights
Content: "This timely collection brings together original explorations of the COVID-19 pandemic and its wide-ranging, global effects on human rights. The contributors argue that a human rights perspective is necessary to understand the pervasive consequences of the crisis, while focusing attention on those being left behind and providing a necessary framework for the effort to "build back better." Expert contributors to this volume address interconnections between the COVID-19 crisis and human rights to equality and non-discrimination, including historical responses to pandemics, populism and authoritarianism, and the rights to health, information, water access, and the environment. Highlighting the dangerous potential for derogations from human rights, authors further scrutinise the human rights compliance of new legislation and policies in relation to issues such as privacy, protection of persons with disabilities, freedom of expression and access to medicines. Acknowledging the pandemic as a defining moment for human rights, the volume proposes a post-crisis human rights agenda to engage civil society and government at all levels in concrete measures to roll back increasing inequality. With rich examples, new thinking, and provocative analyses of human rights, COVID-19, pandemics, crises, and inequality, this book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners in all areas of human rights, global governance, public health, as well as others who are ready to embark on an exploration of these complex challenges"--

Series Statement: Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions Insight
Content: There is a significant gap in financing sustainable development in emerging economies to meet the climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimates that more than USD 4 trillion of financing is needed annually. While much of the capital required will come from OECD-country sources, which hold 80% of worldwide financial assets, there is an untapped pool of local investments to be drawn on. This paper offers three practical directions for policymakers in order to make the promise of local investors contributing to sustainable development a reality. While this level of focus will require concerted effort to implement, it increases the opportunity for local investors to play a crucial role in closing the financing gap

InhaltsübersichtChapter 1: IntroductionChapter 2: Setting the Stage: Background for Understanding the Book of NumbersChapter 3: The Occupation of TransjordanChapter 4: Female InheritanceChapter 5: Conclusion
Content: It has become increasingly clear that Numbers is the litmus test for new ideas relating to the formation of the Pentateuch. At the same time the profusion of ideas has only resulted in a corresponding lack of agreement between scholars. In the present study, Jordan Davis grants significant attention to the geographical references found at the end of the book of Numbers, combining archaeological, historical and literary critical insights, in the attempt to arrive at more »verifiable« results. With a detailed view at the Transjordan conquest traditions (Num 21:21–35; 32; Deut 2:24–3:20*) and the twin legal narratives relating to Zelophehad's daughters (Num 27; 36), the author argues for the historical catalysts underlying these traditions and then points to the ideological motivation behind their redactional expansion.Survey of contentsChapter 1: IntroductionChapter 2: Setting the Stage: Background for Understanding the Book of NumbersChapter 3: The Occupation of TransjordanChapter 4: Female InheritanceChapter 5: Conclusion

Content: "This essential volume explores the vital role of communication in the aging process and how this varies for different social groups and cultural communities. It reveals how communication can empower people in the process of aging, and that how we communicate about age is critically important to - and is at the heart of - aging successfully. Giles et al. confront the uncertainty and negativity surrounding "aging" - a process with which we all have to cope - by expertly placing communication at the core of the process. They address the need to avoid negative language, discuss the lifespan as an evolving adventure, and introduce a new theory of successful aging: The communication ecology model of successful aging (CEMSA). They explore the research on key topics including: Age stereotypes; age identities, and messages of ageism; the role of culture, gender, ethnicity, and being a member of marginalized groups; the ingredients of intergenerational communication; depiction of aging and youth in the media; and how and why talk about death and dying can be instrumental in promoting control over life's demands. Communication for Successful Aging is essential reading for graduate students of psychology, human development, gerontology, communication, as well as scholars in the social sciences, and all of us concerned with this complex academic topic, and personal challenge"--

Content: For pension funds, international assets represent an opportunity to improve their returns while possibly reducing risks. Nonetheless, pension funds in many developing countries face regulations that limit the choice of international investments. This paper proposes a new methodology to estimate the gains from international diversification in which the optimal asset allocation of pension funds is constrained by financial frictions. The empirical strategy is applied to the aggregate holdings of pension funds in a large group of countries to calculate the gains from increasing the current level of exposure to international securities. The methodology should give policy makers the opportunity to identify jurisdictions where pension funds could benefit the most from expanding their foreign holdings

    Series Statement: Transforming LGBTQ lives
Content: Introduction -- Exploring QTPOC Lives -- Theorising Multiplicity -- Belonging -- Building Community -- Decolonising Gender and Sexuality -- Conflict and Harm in Community: The Possibilities for the Reparative and Transformative -- Conclusion.
Content: This book explores the meanings of Queer and Trans People of Colour (QTPOC) activist groups in the UK, considering the tensions around inclusion and belonging across lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) and of colour communities and wider British society. Davis draws de-/anti-/post-colonial, Black feminist, and queer theory into critical psychology to publish the first book of its kind in the UK, developing an intersectional understanding of QTPOC subjectivities and identities. The book examines questions of belonging; racial melancholia; decolonising gender and sexualities; and the joys, erotics, and the difficulties of building and finding QTPOC community that can hold and celebrate our intersectional richness. Offering a radical and critical intervention into psychology, this volume will be of key interest to scholars in Gender Studies and Queer Studies, Psychology and Race, together with activists, community organisers, counsellors, and the third sector.
