Maurice Wilson, à l'aube de ses 35 ans, entreprend de se rendre en monoplan monomoteur à cockpit ouvert sur les flancs de l'Everest pour l'ascensionner et ainsi planter le premier drapeau à son sommet. Ce projet semble fou à bien des égards : l'Anglais n'est ni aviateur, ni alpiniste. Il ne connaît de la marche que les quelques cent kilomètres qu'il aura parcourus dans le Yorkshire en guise d'entraînement. De plus, en 1935, l'aviation en est encore à ses balbutiements et peu auront, avant lui, parcouru de si longues distances sans dommages.En s'appuyant sur le journal qu'il a tenu tout au long de son voyage, Ruth Hanson relate la formidable épopée de Maurice Wilson. Plus que l'entreprise, c'est l'homme qui fascine : sa foi, son ambition, son obstination... tout chez lui n'est que démesure. Si bien que la finalité du projet (malheureusement trop prévisible), n'est en rien la finalité du récit. Mieux vaut s'attacher à l'homme et aux raisons qui le poussèrent au-delà du raisonnable. Son rêve n'était-il que pure folie ?Quoiqu'il en soit, son exploit aura marqué l'histoire de l'Everest, quant à sa réussite, certains aiment à y croire encore... null
