Content: A Part of History is a collection of essays about the British experience of the First World War, published to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in November 1918. Distinguished contributors write on a range of subjects: from contentious debates about military revisionism and pardons for men shot at dawn, to the literature and music that the war inspired and continues to inspire. The book considers the ways in which the theme of remembrance haunts our collective memory, and invades our popular culture. As the last survivors of the 1914-18 generation die out, and the conflict finally passes into the realm of history, A Part of History looks at how the British experience of the War is likely to be researched and written about in the future, and how our understanding of the War is likely to change now that first-hand testimony has been lost.
Content: Isn't war rooted in the vested interests of the ruling classes? (But have not democracies proved as bellicose as other states?) Should not political disputes be settled by civilised negotiations? (But what if the adversary ist not, by your standards, 'civilised'?) Ought states to steer clear of other states' internal conflicts? (Or should they help liberate oppressed peoples?) Which is better, appeasement or a war to end war? Such questions reflect the confusion that still besets liberal-mindes men and women in the face of war, despite centuries during which they have tried to discover its causes and secure its abolition.
