Die Peter-Eisenman-Schau „Barfuß auf weiß glühenden Mauern“ stellt einen Höhepunkt im Ausstellungsprogramm des MAK dar, das mit seinem Architekturschwerpunkt Akzente setzt. Sämtliche Aspekte des Eisenman’schen OEuvres – Eisenman als Architekt, Theoretiker, Autor und Lehrender – werden thematisiert, wobei sich die kuratorische Auswahl auf jüngste Projekte konzentriert. Über eine reine Personale geht die MAK-Ausstellung, die Peter Eisenman nach einer Retrospektive im Canadian Centre for Architecture 1994 erstmals wieder umfassend darstellt, deutlich hinaus. Mit einer architektonischen Intervention, die Peter Eisenman eigens für das MAK entwickelt, wird die MAK-Ausstellungshalle radikal verändert. „Barfuß auf weiß glühenden Mauern“ konfrontiert die Besucher mit einer ungewöhnlichen Raumerfahrung. Eisenman, dessen Arbeit sich durch ein kontinuierliches Hinterfragen bestehender Architekturgesetzmäßigkeiten auszeichnet, nimmt einen massiven Eingriff in die MAK-Ausstellungshalle vor: Eine 2,55 Meter hohe Zwischendecke sowie dreißig Säulen werden den historischen Raum temporär überlagern. Die vertraute Ausstellungshalle erscheint in einem beunruhigenden Licht. „A negative exhibition, sparse and hard hitting“, charakterisiert Eisenman die MAK-Schau. Das an traditionelle Präsentationen gewohnte Ausstellungspublikum wird bewusst irritiert. Die Ausstellungsinhalte erschließen sich erst im Durchwandern der Rauminstallation. Die Halle gestaltet sich dunkel. Einzige Lichtquellen sind die Säulen, die einen jeweils anderen Aspekt des komplexen Schaffens Peter Eisenmans thematisieren. Die für „Barfuß auf weiß glühenden Mauern“ gewählte Präsentationsweise konzentriert sich großteils auf die diagrammatische Analyse – eine für Eisenman typische Arbeitsweise, die in Entwurfsprozessen jegliche auktoriale Handschrift eliminiert und gleichzeitig eine unendliche Fülle von formalen Möglichkeiten eröffnet. Dreidimensionale Diagramme verschiedener Projekte werden zum Großteil extra für die Ausstellung angefertigt. Auch mit historischen Persönlichkeiten und Phänomenen der Architektur setzt sich Eisenman auseinander.
