Die Ausstellung, veranstaltet vom Kulturreferat Regensburg und vom Institut für Slavistik der Universität Regensburg, wurde mit großer Unterstützung der Jüdischen Gemeinde vorbereitet. Sie will die Frage beantworten, wieso Opatoshu für seine Novelle gerade Regensburg zum Schauplatz auserkor. Sie soll die langjährige Freundschaft zwischen Opatoshu und Chagall dokumentieren. Denn zum einen war sie für Chagalls Schaffen vor allem während seines US-amerikanischen Exils von größter Bedeutung: Opatoshu versorgte den Künstler mit immer neuen jiddischen Lektüren, einer wichtigen Inspirationsquelle des Maler-Dichters. Zum anderen verbindet die beiden ein hohes Geschichtsbewußtsein und das Ethos der Verantwortung, den Juden zugefügtes Leid in das jüdisch-christliche Gedächtnis einzuschreiben. Die Ausstellung will eine Brücke zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, zwischen 1519, 1933 und heute schlagen. Die historischen Realien mittelalterlichen jüdischen Lebens in Regensburg sollen neben Bild-, Text- und Filmzeugnisse auch der nationalsozialistischen Zeit in Regensburg treten. Dabei ist besonders darauf einzugehen, daß sowohl Opatoshu nicht nur durch die Fiktionalisierung der Ereignisse um 1519 in Verbindung zu Regensburg steht, sondern auch durch sein Mitwirken an der in Regensburg herausgegebenen jiddischen DP-Zeitschrift "Der najer moment" (Der neue Moment).
