In fünfzehn Kapiteln beleuchtet der Autor beispielhafte Aspekte der deutsch-jüdischen Literaturgeschichte des langen neunzehnten und frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Analysiert werden Werke jüdischer und nichtjüdischer Autoren, in denen jüdische Existenz im deutschsprachigen Mitteleuropa zum Thema wird. Die Gegenstände reichen von Gattungen (historischer Roman, Ghettogeschichte, Zeitroman, Milieuerzählung) über Verfahren und Motive (Verwendung von Litetaturjiddisch, Palästina als Sehnsuchtsziel, Geschichte als gemeinsamer Erfahrungsraum) bis zu Studien von einschlägigen Einzeltexten (u. a. Heine: Almansor, Grillparzer: Die Jüdin von Toledo, Roth: Hotel Savoy, Dinter: Die Sünde wider das Blut, Kolmar: Susanna und Die jüdische Mutter). In ihrer Zusammenstellung rekonstruieren die Kapitel Aspekte eines spannungsreichen Dialogs um Selbstbild und Fremdbild, Orientierung und Identität im Prozess der Verbürgerlichung der Gesellschaft – und Aspekte der Aufkündigung dieses Dialogs.
