Nur die Geschichte verrate, was der Mensch ist, deshalb sei das Schreiben einer Autobiografie, die das eigene Leben in Bezug stelle zu dieser Geschichte, eine reizvolle Herausforderung: Dem 1918 in Berlin geborenen Enkel des deutschen Pressezaren Rudolf Mosse, aufgewachsen im großbürgerlichen Wohlstand einer deutsch-jüdischen Familie, gelang 1933 die Flucht vor den Nazis über den Bodensee. Er studierte in Cambridge Geschichte und Politik, wanderte kurz vor Kriegsbeginn 1939 in die USA aus und war Professor an Universitäten im Mittleren Westen, später auch in Cambridge, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem. Er schrieb viele, auch heute noch aktuelle Bücher (u.a. "Gefallen für das Vaterland", ID 23/93), die vielfach thematisch von der eigenen Geschichte als kultivierter Erbe des untergegangenen klassischen deutschen Bildungsbürgertums liberaler Prägung bestimmt waren. Nach Ansatz und Form dem deutschen Bildungs- und Entwicklungsroman des 19. Jahrhunderts verpflichtete, sehr lesenswerte Autobiografie. (2) (Friedrich Andrae)
