Als die Nationalsozialisten 1933 an die Macht kamen, verstaatlichten sie die Berliner Philharmoniker und unterstellten sie als 〉〉Reichsorchester〈〈 der Aufsicht von Goebbels' Ministerium. In den folgenden Jahren hatten die Musiker sowohl im Reich als auch im Ausland in Hitlers Auftrag zu spielen: Auf dem Parteitag in Nürnberg, zur Eröffnung der Olympischen Spiele 1936 in Berlin, später sogar in den besetzten Gebieten. Das Regime nutzte das Orchester - und das Orchester nutzte das Regime. Es handelte sich um einen Ausnahmezustand auf Dauer, in dem die Musiker versuchten, künstlerische Autonomie mit ideologischen Vorgaben in Einklang zu bringen. Ohne Zweifel profitierten 〉〉die Berliner〈〈 von der privilegierten Behandlung durch die NS-Regierung, dennoch stellte sich das Orchester immer wieder gegen deren musikalische und politische Bevormundung. Eindrucksvoll schildert Misha Aster anhand bisher unveröffentlichter Akten, wie die Musiker - unter ihnen Parteigenossen ebenso wie Juden - diese Zeit erlebten.
