Abstract:
In the primitive metazoan, Trichoplax adhaerens, the fiber cells are responsible for the change of shape. Electron microscopy reveals connections between protoplasmic strands of neighbouring cells marked by an osmiophilic disc-like structure. Possible functions are discussed.
