Stummfilm nach Lessings humanistischem Drama, angesiedelt im Jerusalem des 12. Jahrhunderts zur Zeit der Kreuzzüge, als Christen, Juden und der Islam unmittelbar aufeinandertrafen. Der bildgewaltige, eindrucksvoll inszenierte und faszinierend gespielte Ausstattungsfilm, dessen Titelcharakter durch seine Weitsicht die verschiedenen Glaubensrichtungen zum versöhnlichen Einlenken bringt, ist das Musterbeispiel eines politisch mutwillig missverstandenen Werks. Bei seiner geplanten Erstaufführung 1922 löste er in Deutschland erhebliche Kontroversen aus; angesichts der erstarkenden nationalsozialistischen Bewegung wurde eine Gefährdung der öffentlichen Ordnung nicht ausgeschlossen. Die vorliegende Fassung wurde vom Filmmuseum München korrigiert, rekonstruiert und nach den Konventionen der Entstehungszeit viragiert. [Film-Dienst]
