Abstract:
Theoretical aspects of Chinese historiography in the 1980s. Starting with the "crisis of historiography" (shixue weiji) and the debates on methodology, this article analyzes historical theory in the PRC during the 1980s. Two controversies are more particularly considered : that on periodisation, and that on "historical forces." Thus, in spite of the decline of Marxism, historical research is still conceived of as amalgamating historical knowledge, philosophy and politics. Change is more evident in the search for new topics of investigation and for a reflection on society. In a way typical of the intellectual crisis of the 1980s, political options oscillate between determinism and voluntarism.
