Der international geachtete schwedische Tibetforscher Sven Hedin (1865–1952) legt in diesem Buch, das er vier Jahre nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs veröffentlichte, seine Erinnerungen an die Jahre 1935 bis 1943 vor, in denen er verschiedene Male Deutschland besucht und mehrmals mit Adolf Hitler gesprochen hatte sowie mit einer Reihe von führenden deutschen Politikern und Militärs zusammengekommen war. Hedins Beschreibungen zeichnen aus, daß er seine Schilderungen der Ereignisse so abfaßte, wie er sie seinerzeit erlebt hatte. Gleichzeitig erzählt er von den Eindrücken, die er bei seinen Rundreisen und Vorträgen von Deutschland und seinen Menschen gewann. Hedin bemüht sich um strikte Authentizität, und so gelingen ihm bemerkenswerte Charakterbilder von Hitler sowie von Männern wie Göring, Goebbels, Heß, Ribbentrop, Himmler u.v.a. Im Krieg hatte er seine Kontakte genutzt und sich bei Hitler erfolgreich für die Begnadigung von zehn Norwegern eingesetzt, die wegen Spionage und Feindbegünstigung von einem deutschen Kriegsgericht zum Tode verurteilt worden waren.
