This paper analyses the growth of the relationship between Japan and South Africa from the turn of the century, with strong emphasis on the economic elements but without neglecting the political aspects as they impinged on both countries from 1945 onwards. The prospects for a mature and enduring relationship in the future are also surveyed. (SAJIA/DÜI)
