Im Herbst 2005 kam am Bach-Archiv in Leipzig eine namhafte internationale Expertenrunde zu einem Kolloquium zusammen: Musikwissenschaftler, Editionsleiter, Archivare und Musikpraktiker. Ihnen allen ging es um die Frage, wie die Musik Bachs in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts erschlossen wurde. Maßgeblich und initiativ beteiligt an diesem Prozess waren bedeutende Komponisten: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, seine Schwester Fanny Hensel und Robert Schumann. Von den drei romantischen "Bachianern" gingen Entwicklungen aus, die bis heute im Konzertleben und in der Editionspraxis nachwirken. Unser modernes Bach-Bild erweist sich bis in Einzelheiten von ihrer vielfältig fruchtbaren Tätigkeit geprägt. Als greifbares Ergebnis des Kolloquiums und als neuerlicher Impuls für weitere Forschung und für die musikalische Praxis erscheinen 24 Beiträge, die am Leipziger Bach-Archiv sorgfältig redigiert wurden, zu folgenden Schwerpunkten:
