The “Human Embryology Collection” at the Göttingen Centre of Anatomy is an important reference collection for histological sectioned human embryos and fetuses. It’s founder, anatomist Erich Blechschmidt (1904-1992), is suspected of having used specimens obtained through Nazi crimes for his collection in its early days and ofhaving covered up their origins. These allegations were investigated within a two-year research project on specimen provenance. The findings of this historical investigation were then used for a comprehensive ethical evaluation of the collection’s holdings, using applicable and relevant guidelines on collection ethics.
