Die 2. Amtszeit des gegenwärtigen Generalsekretärs der Vereinten Nationen (2001 mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet) neigt sich langsam dem Ende zu. Eine Biografie war längst überfällig. Diese legt nunmehr die FAZ-Journalistin und ausgewiesene UN-Kennerin vor. Themen wie die noch nicht in Gang gekommene UN-Reform oder die nicht völlig aufgeklärte Korruptionsaffäre um Annans Sohn Kofi ("Kofigate") können von ihr dabei jedoch zwangsläufig nur angeschnitten werden. Es gelingt der Autorin gleichwohl, den Lebensweg des sympathischen und durchaus charismatischen Volkswirtschaftlers und Politikers von seiner Kindheit in Ghana über seine stetige Karriere innerhalb diverser UN-Institutionen bis hin an die Spitze der Weltorganisation im Dezember 1996 mit der notwendigen Distanz anschaulich nachzuzeichnen. Auch problematische Phasen seiner Amtszeit werden beleuchtet, z.B. das gespannte Verhältnis zur USA während des Irak-Krieges. Ein bestens recherchiertes, dabei nicht unkritisches Porträt, das dem Leser auch den Privatmann Annan näher bringt. (1)
