Malles betont die Eigenständigkeit des 1843 umnachtet im Turmzimmer eines Tübinger Schreiners verstorbenen grossen Klassikers durch teils ungekürzt wiedergegebene Zitate, verbunden durch kursiv gesetzte, kluge Kommentare. Er stellt die Bedeutung seiner Gedichte heraus, die Liebe, Freiheit, Schönheit besingen, Begriffe, die Hölderlins Denken und Schreiben bestimmten. Hauptaugenmerk gilt dem schwer zugänglichen Briefroman "Hyperion", dessen Streben "eins zu sein mit allem, was lebt" Hölderlin selbst als Lebensziel bewegte.
