Originaltitel: CzechMate - In search of Jirí Menzel
Inhalt: Epic, expansive, affectionate and deeply passionate, "CzechMate - In Search of Jiri Menzel" is the definitive work on the Czechoslovak New Wave. This extraordinary documentary film, a labour of love by archivist and filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, has a depth and scale unparalleled in the study of the Czechoslovak cinema. Jiri Menzel's debut film "Closely Observed Trains" (Ostře sledované vlaky, 1966) made a profound impression on young film student Dungarpur. Years later, he invited Menzel to meet him in a Prague café - and so began a conversation and a friendship that has culminated in this epic, seven-hour film that not only explores the deceptively whimsical comic films of Jiri Menzel, but all of the artists who strove to make films that whispered subversion and rebellion often at the risk of their livelihood, or even their lives. Filmed over a period of seven years, Dungarpur and his team interviewed filmmakers, actors, crew members, writers, historians and critics who had been touched by the New Wave. [www.amazon.co.uk]

Inhalt: Having made its debut in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, anti-aircraft artillery was used extensively in the First World War. It was, however, not until the Second World War that anti-aircraft artillery truly came into prominence, shooting down more aircraft than any other weapon and seriously affecting the conduct of air operations. The development of anti-aircraft artillery continued into the Cold War, resulting in the extensive introduction of surface-to-air missiles, or SAMs. Such weapons are cheaper to manufacture, simpler to maintain, and easier to operate than the vast fleet of aircraft required to defend an airspace. Though the first combat success of such weapons was during the Vietnam War, when a Soviet-designed S-75 Dvina missile shot down a USAF F-4C Phantom on 24 July 1965, it was the Yom Kippur War of 1973 which brought surface-to-air missiles to the centre stage. During this short but bitter conflict, Egyptian and Syrian air defences shot down nearly fifty Israeli aircraft in the first three days alone - almost a fourth of Israel’s entire combat aircraft fleet. In all, Israel lost 104 aircraft during the war and, for the first time, more aircraft were lost to SAMs than any other cause. The age of surface-to-air missiles had dawned. In this unique examination, the author details the development of not just surface-to-air missiles, but all anti-aircraft artillery, since 1972\. The part that such equipment played in all of the major conflicts since then is explored, including the Soviet Afghan War, the Falklands War, in which Rapier was deployed, the conflict in Lebanon, Kosovo and Bosnia, the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 1993. The investigation is brought right up to date by a study of the weapons, tactics and engagements seen in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen. (AUT)

Inhalt: The war, which began with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, is the most significant conflict of the century so far, even outstripping the US invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. With it, war revisited Europe after 70 years, plunged it into turmoil, and directly or indirectly, impacted the entire globe. What makes it worse than earlier wars, is the nuclear shadow hovering over it which threatens to darken the world. A war which everyone thought would be over in a fortnight or so, extended interminably. The sheer scope of the war is reminiscent of the Second World War, and many of the battles were fought on the same ground. The book traces the background and major flow of events right from the crucial battle of Kyiv and Kharkov in the initial days, the Russian capture of the coast, the Donbas battles, the Ukrainian counter-offensive and the Russian response. The economic and geopolitical aspects are highlighted. The impact on India and the world, with a likely emergence of a new global order, have been delved into in detail. The book takes you through the course of the war and helps envision its impact, as it explores one of the most epochal events of our times. (AUT)
