In dieser voluminösen Biografie wollen die Autoren, im Gegensatz zu einer von ihnen beklagten eindimensionalen Dämonisierung (gemeint ist: R. Zhang, 2005), Mao als vielschichtige Persönlichkeit beschreiben. Nach der Lektüre überwiegt aber der Eindruck, dass Mao in 1. Linie als einer der gröt︢en Verbrecher des 20. Jahrhunderts zu beschreiben ist. Pantsov, ein in Russland geborener Historiker, stützt sich auf neues Quellenmaterial aus russischen Archiven. Das Buch arbeitet deshalb u.a. besonders das Verhältnis zu Stalin heraus, den Mao auch über seinen Tod hinaus sehr verehrte. Mao führte z.B. mit grosser Brutalität das stalinistische System in der Volksrepublik ein. Das Buch behandelt darüber hinaus die einzelnen Stationen seines Lebens, in dem sich die Geschichte einer Nation widerspiegelt. Wesentlich ausführlicher als frühere Mao-Biografien (s.F. Wemheuer: 2010; T. Grimm, zuletzt 1999; J. Spence: 2003; S. Dabringhaus: 2008); unsinnig erscheint allerdings angesichts der Gräueltaten Maos der Versuch der Autoren, auf Werturteile zu verzichten.
