Abstract:
Roubaix traverse une crise économique de grande ampleur ; avec son cortège d'exclusions sociales, de frustrations, de mises à l'écart de populations entières. Dans ce contexte, un groupe de sociologues du CADIS, sous la direction de Michel Wieviorka, s'est rendu sur le terrain, pour voir comment la montée du racisme prenait corps, quels facteurs précis, outre bien sûr la pauvreté et le chômage, favorisaient son éclosion et son développement. Nous avons interrogé ces chercheurs, pour comprendre les raisons profondes, souvent beaucoup plus compliquées qu'il n'y paraît, de cette montée du racisme, mais aussi pour apprendre à combattre cette tendance lourde qui empoisonne la démocratie française. Afin de mieux cerner les réalités économiques et sociales propres à Roubaix, nous reproduisons (pp. 15-16), en introduction à cet entretien, un passage du livre La France raciste, qui décrit la situation générale de cette ville.
