ID-A 10/14), wo die Autorin selbst teilweise lebt: Die selbstbewusste 19-jährige Minou, Tochter eines katholischen, aber weltoffenen Buchhändlers in Carcassonne, ist seit dem Tod ihrer Mutter für den Haushalt und ihre beiden jüngeren Geschwister verantwortlich. Als Minou einen mysteriösen Brief erhält, weiß sie nicht, dass sie in Lebensgefahr schwebt, bis ihr Vater ein Geheimnis über ihre Geburt verrät. Gleichzeitig kämpft der junge Hugenotte Piet Reydon in Toulouse für die Rechte der Hugenotten, nie genau wissend, ob es sich bei seinen Mitkämpfern nicht um Spione der Katholiken und der brutalen Inquisition handelt. Er reist nach Carcassonne, um sich mit einem ehemaligen Kommilitonen und ehrgeizigen Freund, der inzwischen in der katholischen Kirche Karriere macht, zu versöhnen.
