Eines Morgens muss eine quirlige Kakerlake, die in das Haus in der Londoner Downing Street No 10 gelaufen ist, erstaunt feststellen, dass sie sich in den Körper des Premierministers Jim Sams verwandelt hat. Erfreulich für ihn, dass auch der größte Teil seines Kabinetts aus ihm treu ergebenen Ex-Schaben besteht. Nervenaufreibende Wochen warten auf den Machtmenschen Sams - gemeint sind die Herbst-Ereignisse vor der Dezemberwahl 2019. Mit der aberwitzigen Reversalismus-Theorie als neue ökonomische und gesellschaftliche Basis, mit der der Wirtschaftskreislauf und Geldfluss praktisch umgedreht wird, um wundersame Milliardenüberschüsse zu erzielen, macht sich der Autor über die Rückwartsgewandtheit der konservativen Regierungspolitik lustig. Eine bitterbös überzeichnete, zwischen Satire und Farce pendelnde Brexit-Persiflage, die vorwiegend Johnson, aber auch Trump mit pechschwarzem Humor karikiert. McEwans Novelle, auch eine Anspielung auf Kafkas "Die Verwandlung", ist sprachlich gelungen, doch inhaltlich zerfahren und nicht so brillant wie die Vorgänger (vgl. ID-A 24/19).
