Content: Zebrafish are widely considered the best model for vertebrate development. The embryo is transparent, thereby enabling visualization and use of labelling and transgenic approaches. Moreover, because of the ease of inducing new mutations in zebrafish and similarity with the human genome, this organism may be used effectively for disease studies. For example, mutant zebrafish are being utilized for testing drugs that will combat a range of human diseases, from Alzheimer's and cancer to kidney failure and congenital heart disease. For the first time, this atlas provides the research community with a complete reference for zebrafish anatomy spanning the early embryo all the way to adulthood. The authors employ the technique of optical projection tomography (OPT), and offer a series of sections in multiple planes from each sample. The contents are organized by developmental stages, with over 200 images that contain annotations describing anatomical structures relevant to development. In addition, chapters feature explanatory text that highlights major developments in the zebrafish during each stage

    ISBN: 9781402052736
    Series Statement: Monographiae Biologicae 85
Content: This is the second book of a series treating the hypotrichs, a major part of the spirotrichous ciliates. It summarises 230 years of morphological, morphogenetic, faunistic, and ecological data, heretofore scattered in some 1,300 references around the world. The book provides taxonomists, cell biologists, and ecologists with a thorough survey supplying synonyms, nomenclature and systematics, and an extensive description of morphology and ecology, including almost all published records, for each species.
Content: This monograph is the second of a series treating the hypotrichs, a major part of the spirotrichous ciliates. The urostyloids are characterised by a zigzag-arrangement of the ventral cirri. Like the first part of the series, the Oxytrichidae, it summarises the morphological, morphogenetic, faunistic, and ecological data from the past 230 years, scattered in more than 1300 references from all over the world. Dichotomous keys lead to 36 genera and subgenera comprising 153 species illustrated by more than 2100 figures, including original ones. The treatise offers taxonomists, cell biologists, and ecologists a thorough and up-to-date revision because for each species a detailed list of synonyms, a discussion of the nomenclature and systematics, and an extensive description of the morphology and ecology, including almost all published faunistic records, are provided. With the monographs of the Urostyloidea and the Oxytrichidae the interested scientist can identify more than 320 species of hypotrichs, which are an important component of the eukaryotic microbial life in limnetic, marine, and terrestrial habitats.
Note: Includes bibliographical references (p. 1223-1276) and indexes , CONTENTS; Preface; Acknowledgements and Permissions; A General Section; 1 Morphology, Biology, and Terminology; 2 Phylogeny; 3 Previous Classifications and Revisions; 4 Parasitism; 5 Ecology, Occurrence, and Geographic Distribution; 6 Collecting, Culturing, Observing, and Staining of Urostyloid Ciliates; 7 Species Concept and Nomenclature; B Systematic Section; Urostyloidea (154 species); Taxa of Unknown Position within the Urostyloidea (5 species); Supplement to the Oxytrichidae (2 species); Taxa not Considered; Addenda; References; Systematic Index; Table Index , Electronic reproduction; Available via World Wide Web
