Content: We introduce a powerful method for cleaning time series - Multi-Channel Singular Spectrum Analysis (MSSA). “Cleaning” means filling data gaps and removing unphysical spikes, which are chronic problems. MSSA utilizes all available information in “time” and “space” with autocorrelations, correlations, and lagged correlations. MSSA performs demonstrably better than other methods. Here we present tests using MSSA to fill data gaps, with positive results. Spike removal is in a separate paper

Content: Data cleaning in the real world has to cope with new data arriving (or failing to arrive) as time passes, and which may be bad data. We illustrate MSSA data cleaning with a real-time historical simulation on some problematic data. The example also serves to determine some MSSA algorithm parameters. This paper expands previous work on MSSA applied to data cleaning (filling data holes, removing spikes, simulation) described in previous papers

Content: The paper published in the January 2015 issue of this journal by Gusmano and colleagues entitled “Shanghai rising: health improvements as measured by avoidable mortality since 2000” has spurred this commentary. We discuss controversial issues surrounding the concept of avoidable mortality in health service research in general and Gusmano’s study in particular. The impact of overall social development on mortality may be under-appreciated in Gusmano’s report; the innovative efforts of healthcare professionals to use cutting-edge technology and evidence approved preventive strategies to reduce healthcare cost and improve the life quality of community members may not necessarily come to fruition in death reduction, and might be undervalued, too. More critically, the shape and magnitude of emerging health issues in Shanghai, such as accidents and injuries, pollution-related cancers, may be camouflaged in Gusmano’s report. We conclude this commentary by suggesting the most urgent questions to be addressed in the future studies

Content: This thesis studies French adverbs that are morphologically marked with a -ment suffix and of their Chinese equivalents. Due to the suffix -ment, French adverbs are easily identifiable in terms of parts of speech, but within this whole class, subclasses based on their syntactic and semantic differences are posited. According to their scope, adverbs are classically subdivided into « sentential adverbs » and « constituent adverbs ». As hinted by their denomination, phrase adverbs are associated with the whole sentence; whereas constituent adverbs are only related to one or several constituents. Two syntactic tests are used to pinpoint their difference: negation and clefting. Then sentential adverbs and constituents are subclassified adverbs according to their meaning differences. Based on the classification of French adverbs, I study the Chinese equivalents of each subclass of French adverbs. As an isolating language, Chinese has a scanty morphology. The French suffix -ment doesn't have a homogeneous corresponding form in Chinese: the Chinese equivalents of the French adverbs cans be adverbs or adverbial phrases. As in French, negation and clefting also function as syntactic tests to oppose phrase adverbs and constituent adverbs. But the syntactic criterions in French cannot be used directly in Chinese. That's why I propose new tests, such as the compatibility with the question shi-bu-shi "be-Neg.-be". Our analysis finally leads to establish a classification of Chinese equivalents to the French adverbs -ment

Content: Fair lending analysis of non-mortgage credit products often involves proxying for race/ethnicity since such information is not required to be reported. Using mortgage data, this paper evaluates a series of proxy approaches (geo, surname, geo-surname, and BISG) as compared with the race/ethnicity reported under HMDA. The BISG proxy predicts the reported race/ethnicity the best as judged by prediction bias, correlation coefficient, and discriminatory power. In assessing fair lending risks where classification of race/ethnicity is called for, we propose the BISG maximum classification, which produces a more accurate estimation of mortgage pricing disparities than the current practices. The above conclusions withhold various robustness tests. Additional analysis is performed to assess the proxies on non-mortgage credits by leveraging consumer credit bureau data

Content: Motivated by a widely observed phenomenon in China that female college students outperform male students in economics and most of social science subjects, this paper examines gender differences in student performance in the intermediate microeconomics course in China. In stark contrast to what has been documented in the existing literature, which primarily focuses on developed countries and the U.S. in particular, I find that holding constant observed student characteristics, female students on average appear to earn higher scores than male students in China. I find that this is not because of female students’ ability, family background and other unobservable student characteristics. Instead, it is simply a result of female students exerting more effort than male students. I further explore a wide range of possible explanations for the gender difference in diligence, but find little support for any of the explanations. Despite this, my results indicate that there is no systematic discrimination against female students in the Chinese college education system
