Mamadou lebt als Österreicher im Senegal, zuerst als Tourist, dann als Obdachloser. Erst erlosch das Visum, dann gingen die Geldreserven aus. Mamadou lebt in einer Höhle direkt an der Küste. Als er auf der Straße zusammenbricht, lernt er Coumba kennen, die ihm hilft und ihn pflegt. Schließlich bleibt ihm nur, nach Europa zurückzukehren. Da seine Schwester die Reisekosten für Coumba nicht übernehmen will, beschließen die beiden den Weg nach Europa gemeinsam auf einem der Boote anzutreten, die die Kanaren ansteuern, um dort Asyl zu beantragen. Auf einem dieser Boote werden nun die Geschichte der Reise und die Vergangenheit Mamadous erzählt. Der Leser ist hautnah dabei, wenn der Motor erstirbt oder das kleine Boot dem Sturm trotzen muss. Als einer von Wenigen überlebt Mamadou die Überfahrt. Ein Roman, der nachhallt, der aber auch Unverständnis hervorruft, denn wer würde freiwillig auf eines der Boote gehen, die wir nur aus den Nachrichten kennen? Dennoch eine neue Perspektive auf ein aktuelles Thema, die gerne breit empfohlen wird. Mareike Liedmann
