Content: Historians have long wondered at the improbable rise of the Attalids of Pergamon after 188 BCE. The Roman-brokered Settlement of Apameia offered a new map - a brittle framework for sovereignty in Anatolia and the eastern Aegean. What allowed the Attalids to make this map a reality and leave their indelible Pergamene imprint on our Classical imagination? In this uniquely comprehensive study of the political economy of the kingdom, Noah Kaye rethinks the impact of Attalid imperialism on the Greek polis and the multicultural character of the dynasty's notorious propaganda. By synthesizing new findings in epigraphy, archaeology, and numismatics, he shows the kingdom for the first time from the inside. The Pergamene way of ruling was a distinctively non-coercive and efficient means of taxing and winning loyalty. Royal tax collectors collaborated with city and village officials on budgets and minting, while the kings utterly transformed the civic space of the gymnasium

Uniform Title: Law and temporality in Bavli Mo'ed
Content: "Time in the Babylonian Talmud explores how rabbinic jurists' language, reasoning, and storytelling reveal their assumptions about what we call time. By "time," I do not mean measurements of duration such as hours, minutes, or days. There are more elastic and capacious approaches to time in the Babylonian Talmud (Bavli). As Virginia Woolf wrote, "An hour, once it lodges in the queer element of the human spirit, may be stretched to fifty or a hundred times its clock length; on the other hand, an hour may be accurately represented on the timepiece of the mind by one second." Considering imaginative writing by modernist writers like Woolf, as well as modern philosophical writings, allows us to break away from familiar presuppositions about time and to see temporal phenomena anew even in ancient cultural artifacts. This book turns to an ancient text, the Bavli, which remains a foundational text of Jewish law and culture, and uses it to think carefully about ancient and contemporary concepts of time. As we will see, temporality permeates the most intriguing legal concepts in the Bavli and it is equally central to the Bavli's storytelling. With this book, then, I hope to move a common debate about time in classical Judaism beyond the question of whether there was or was not a concept of time in rabbinic sources. Instead, I argue for examining in detail "time-like" phenomena in rabbinic texts. This approach sheds light on rabbinic thought in its late-antique intellectual contexts and reveals what Bavli temporal thinking can contribute to contemporary theories of time"--

Content: "Jimmy Carter: Citizen of the South uses photographs and oral histories to illuminate the distinctly Southern life of the former President. The South nurtured Carter, provided a launching pad for his political career, and supported the various activities of his post-presidential life. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter both grew up in Plains, Georgia. Upon returning to Plains after attending Georgia Tech and serving in the Navy, Carter farmed and ran a peanut warehouse while he and Rosalynn raised their family. In 1962, he won election to the Georgia Senate and became Governor just eight years later. With the assistance of many Georgians, he was sworn in as President of the United States in 1977. After losing his bid for reelection, Carter returned home to Plains. Folks from across the South welcomed Jimmy and Rosalynn back home. Soon after planting themselves in the South once again, Carter became a professor at Emory University and established both the Carter Presidential Library and the Carter Center in Atlanta. The Carters also became deeply involved with the Americus, Georgia charity, Habitat for Humanity. Indeed, it was in these post-presidential years that Carter cemented his status as a Citizen of the South and established himself as a force for good in Georgia, throughout the South, and across the world"--
