Note: Amer-European settlement of the Great Plains transformed bountiful Native soil into pasture and cropland, distorting the prairie ecosystem as it was understood and used by the peoples who originally populated the land. Settlers justified this transformation with the unexamined premise of deficiency, according to which the Great Plains region was inadequate in flora and fauna and the region lacking in modern civilization. Drawing on history, sociology, art, and economic theory, Frances W. Kaye counters the argument of deficiency, pointing out that, in its original ecological state, no region can possibly be incomplete. Goodlands examines the settlers' misguided theory, discussing the ideas that shaped its implementation, the forces that resisted it, and Indigenous ideologies about what it meant to make good use of the land. By suggesting methods for redeveloping the Great Plains that are founded on native cultural values, Goodlands serves the region in the context of a changing globe , English

Content: The development and function of the immune system is dependent on interactions between haematopoietic cells and non-hematopoietic stromal cells. The non-hematopoietic stromal cells create the microenvironment in which the immune system operates, providing an architectural landscape for hematopoietic cell-cell interactions and molecular cues governing haematopoietic cell positioning, growth and survival. Not surprisingly, therefore, aberrant stromal cell function has recently been shown to play a key role in the development of disease pathologies associated with immune dysfunction. For example, remodelling of lymphoid tissue stroma and the development of ectopic tertiary lymphoid tissues are characteristic of many infectious and inflammatory diseases and stromal cells have a recognised role in lymphoma and tumour development and resistance to therapy. An increased understanding of the molecular basis of stromal cell differentiation and function in these varied contexts will provide new tools to promote research on stromal cell biology and immune dysfunction, and potential new targets for therapeutic intervention in diseases with a major impact on public health. The importance of stromal cells and the molecular mechanisms of stromal cell function in the regulation of immune responses have only recently been appreciated and thus represent an exciting new area in immunology

Content: Israel and Iran have come to view each other as direct regional rivals. The two countries are not natural rivals; they have shared geopolitical interests, which led to years of cooperation both before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution. But their rivalry has intensified recently, particularly with the rise of fundamentalist leaders in Iran and the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran posing grave strategic and ideological challenges to Israel.

Content: The ideal of balance and its association with what is ordered, just, and healthful remained unchanged throughout the medieval period. The central place allotted to balance in the workings of nature and society also remained unchanged. What changed within the culture of scholasticism, between approximately 1280 and 1360, was the emergence of a greatly expanded sense of what balance is and can be. In this groundbreaking history of balance, Joel Kaye reveals that this new sense of balance and its potentialities became the basis of a new model of equilibrium, shaped and shared by the most acute and innovative thinkers of the period. Through a focus on four disciplines - scholastic economic thought, political thought, medical thought, and natural philosophy - Kaye's book reveals that this new model of equilibrium opened up striking new vistas of imaginative and speculative possibility, making possible a profound re-thinking of the world and its workings.

Content: This collection of papers by an international group of authors honors Jonathan Kaye's contributions to phonology by expanding some of Kaye's ideas to a variety of theoretical topics and languages. The set of ideas discussed or used in this collection includes: empty categories, licensing relationships and constraints, a restrictive two-levelled approach to phonology (without rule ordering or constraint ranking), a restrictive theory of syllabic representation (without the codas constituent and with exclusively binary branching), theories of the phonology-phonetics interface in which phonology is motivated independently of phonetics, and the metatheoretical flaws in a number of widely accepted but rarely questioned views on phonology.

Content: With the rise of systems biology as an approach in biochemistry research, using high throughput techniques such as mass spectrometry to generate metabolic profiles of cancer metabolism is becoming increasingly popular. There are examples of cancer metabolic profiling studies in the academic literature; however they are often only in journals specific to the metabolomics community. This book will be particularly useful for post-graduate students and post-doctoral researchers using this pioneering technique of network-based correlation analysis. The approach can be adapted to the analysis of any large scale metabolic profiling experiment to answer a range of biological questions in a range of species or for a range of diseases

Content: This book offers a progress report on efforts to meet the challenges faced by ovarian cancer patients and their doctors. It provides a current perspective on therapeutic developments as a partnership between laboratory-based and clinical-based researchers.
Content: Despite rapid advances in understanding the biology of ovarian cancer, progress in treatment has been slow. But the prospects for improvement have never been better. A wide range of novel therapeutic targets now present themselves for clinical evaluation and initial results are certainly encouraging. In this text, all these areas are covered by experts in the field. Each chapter provides up-to-date coverage of clinical information, prefaced by a description of the rational basis for the selection of each target area and consideration of biomarkers that can be used to aid clinical evaluation. The four editors work together within the Ovarian Cancer Action collaborative research programme in London and they bring a wealth of laboratory and clinical expertise to this topic. The text should provide an invaluable source of reference for clinical and laboratory-based researchers working to meet the challenges of ovarian cancer.
