    Abstract: Communication is at the heart of everything we do as consultants. We are constantly striving for new and better ways to guide our clients to make informed decisions. In situ auralizations of major pieces of future mechanical / electrical equipment allows major stakeholders and decision makers to get an aural sense for various equipment configurations, enclosure types, and barrier wall buildups prior to installation. After the auralization, board members and homeowners from past projects had a richer understanding of the anticipated experience at the property line and nearby classroom spaces when compared to reviewing graphs and charts alone. We will explore the value of, and challenges with, this in situ auralization method, as well as some future improvements to further validate the process through the lens of two past projects—New Trier High School and Lake Bluff Middle School in Illinois.

    Abstract: Designing with sensitivity toward our natural environment relates not only to the resources that are used in the design, construction, and ongoing operation of buildings, but also to creating environments inspired by nature to achieve a level of comfort in our surroundings. Green building design is by no means at odds with the goals of acoustic design. An overarching byproduct of good design should be an environment that is both pleasing to the ear and to the earth’s resources. These principles can be subtle and subdued, such as in the reuse of building materials in the Writer’s Theatre and the design of buildings to be flexible insuring longevity for Duke University. Or, rather than pouring energy into creating materials, buildings for music can be engineered with stiffness in mind to maintain energy and body, such as in the new orchestra shell at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. More traditionally, the Tower at PNC Plaza’s tagline is the “world’s greenest skyscraper;” yet, the interior of the office space shows minimal obvious signs of LEED influence. Alternatively, nature’s touch is right on the sleeve of the National Research Defense Counsel project with the inclusion of foliage grown directly on the walls.

    Abstract: The design of a 600-seat opera house is a rare opportunity. The cost of modern opera production leads to much larger facilities and small venues are more frequently multi-purpose venues by nature, leading to the use of concert hall or lyric theatre forms that can be pressed into service for opera. The United States has many small theatres, mostly on college campuses, but few see frequent use for Opera and as a result design choices tilt away from optimal for Opera performance. Historic opera houses of Europe present more opportunities for exploration. Many follow the Italianate form which is intimate and evokes our sense of what an opera house “should” be, though closer investigation exposes the weakness in these designs both theatrically and acoustically. The experience for many patrons is removed and lonely with severely challenged sightlines and an acoustic experience that is frontal, dry, and unengaging. Our exploration took us to the Royal Opera in the Palace of Versailles whose form varies in key ways from the typical. While the construction techniques of Versailles hinder its acoustic response, as inspiration, a new form for intimate opera is created.

    Abstract: Within an academic context, learning and practice of performance is as important as the performance itself. The Brockman Hall for Opera at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music has been designed to wrap the vocal performer with an intimate and immediate response without sacrificing envelopment achieved though reverberant energy. The result is a stage that allows the vocalist to stretch their sound to meet each of the 600 audience members while honing their skills of articulation. Orchestra musicians’ training is expanded in a pit that can support a wide repertoire from the baroque to a grand opera of 70 musicians, providing a space that allows musicians hone their skills as they accompany voice on stage.

    Abstract: Negotiation of a design for a 600-seat opera and chamber music hall presents challenges of dimension. Can the main floor audience enter under the parterre? What is the relationship of the singer to the closest audience members, leaving room for a full-size orchestra? Two full concept designs were carried to fully plausible outcomes to test these questions as well as the question of the resulting acoustic environment in order to arrive at decisions amongst the design team and user groups. The power of auralization and visualization tools was brought to bear on the decision making process, supplementing comprehensive benchmarking studies. While each constituent went into the process with moderately to significant biases, all entered the final discussions having arrived with an open mind about the optimal outcome for the unique circumstances of the project. Communication among the team using the medium of greatest familiarity for multiple constituents led to an outcome that has broad support from the entirety of the design team.
