During the past four decades China has experienced a dramatic fertility transition. However, fertility change did not occur homogeneously across the country; there are marked regional differences in the timing and pace of fertility transition. Moreover, there is considerable variation in the fertility behaviour of women with different educational backgrounds, occupations and places of residence. The article examines the major determinants of China's fertility transition. (DÜI-Sen)
