    Abstract: Cool road pavements contribute to mitigating urban heat islands. To evaluate the heat balance in paved surfaces and to select appropriate road construction materials that help suppress heat islands, an accurate understanding of heat transport parameters such as thermal conductivity (λ) and heat capacity (HC) is important. Recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste, including scrap construction materials and industrial by-products, are often used for road construction; however, λ and HC of recycled aggregates especially for roadbeds are not fully understood. This study involved a series of laboratory tests to measure λ and HC of recycled concrete and clay brick aggregates ( 〈 40 mm) and their mixtures with autoclaved aerated concrete grains ( 〈 2 mm) under varied moisture conditions. The measured λ and HC increased with increasing volumetric water content (θ). Closed-form models for estimating λ(θ) were proposed using normalized thermal conductivity (λe) and effective saturation (Se). The new λe(Se) models performed well for the measured data compared to previously proposed models and would be useful to evaluate λ of recycled aggregates for roadbed materials.

    Abstract: The soil sorption coefficient (Kd) of glyphosate mainly controls its transport and fate in the environment. Laboratory-based analysis of Kd is laborious and expensive. This study aimed to test the feasibility of visible near-infrared spectroscopy (vis–NIRS) as an alternative method for glyphosate Kd estimation at a country scale and compare its accuracy against pedotransfer function (PTF). A total of 439 soils with a wide range of Kd values (37–2409 L kg−1) were collected from Denmark (DK) and southwest Greenland (GR). Two modeling scenarios were considered to predict Kd: a combined model developed on DK and GR samples and individual models developed on either DK or GR samples. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques were applied to develop vis–NIRS models. Results from the best technique were validated using a prediction set and compared with PTF for each scenario. The PTFs were built with soil texture, OC, pH, Feox, and Pox. The ratio of performance to interquartile distance (RPIQ) was 1.88, 1.70, and 1.50 for the combined (ANN), DK (ANN), and GR (PLSR) validation models, respectively. vis–NIRS obtained higher predictive ability for Kd than PTFs for the combined dataset, whereas PTF resulted in slightly better estimations of Kd on the DK and GR samples. However, the differences in prediction accuracy between vis–NIRS and PTF were statistically insignificant. Considering the multiple advantages of vis–NIRS, e.g., being rapid and non-destructive, it can provide a faster and easier alternative to PTF for estimating glyphosate Kd.

    Abstract: Patient-, physician-, and health care system-related barriers of cancer pain management in patients with malignant diseases are a recognized and widely investigated issue. The purpose of this review is to summarize the main findings of empirical research on these barriers in the literature. The most significant patientrelated barriers were patient reluctance to report pain and adhere to treatment recommendations. Besides that, cognitive, affective, and sensory patient-related barriers to cancer pain management with opioid analgesics have been studied using quantitative and qualitative research methods. The Barriers Questionnaire and its shortened and modified versions were the most commonly used instruments in the context of research on patient-related barriers to cancer pain management. The most prominent physicianrelated barriers were insufficient physicians’ knowledge about cancer pain management, inadequate patterns of pain assessment, and inadequate opioid prescription. The methodologies used to conduct the majority of the studies on physician-related barriers were weak. Nevertheless, physician knowledge of pain management guidelines, the quality of pain assessment and opioid prescription have been shown to be obviously better in a few Western countries. Institutional and health care system-related barriers were relevant only in countries with restrictive opioid prescription regulations. The evaluation of the influence of cultural-social-economical background on cancer pain management could probably help to obtain better insight into the problems of unrelieved cancer pain.
