Content: When it comes to frameworks, the familiar story of the elephant and the six blind philosophers seems to apply. As each philoso pher encountered a separate part of the elephant, each pronounced his considered, but flawed judgement. One blind philosopher felt a leg and thought it a tree. Another felt the tail and thought he held a rope. Another felt the elephant's flank and thought he stood before a wall. We're supposed to learn about snap judgements from this alle gory, but its author might well have been describing design automation frameworks. For in the reality of today's product development requirements, a framework must be many things to many people. xiv CAD Frameworks: Integration Technology for CAD As the authors of this book note, framework design is an optimi zation problem. Somehow, it has to be both a superior rope for one and a tremendous tree for another. Somehow it needs to provide a standard environment for exploiting the full potential of computer-aided engineering tools. And, somehow, it has to make real such abstractions as interoperability and interchangeability. For years, we've talked about a framework as something that provides application-oriented services, just as an operating system provides system-level support. And for years, that simple statement has hid the tremendous complexity of actually providing those services

Content: Presented here are authoritative and up-to-date assessments of the homogenous and heterogenous chemical and physical processes occuring in the troposphere and stratosphere, especially during the "ozone hole" event. The book begins with an overview of atmospheric chemistry, followed by reviews of relevant homogenous reactions in the gas phase and the microphysics and physical chemistry of heterogenous processes that occur on, or in aerosols, rain and ice. Low temperature laboratory studies are compared with related fieldwork measurements, particularly in relation to the formation and composition of polar stratospheric clouds. Also discussed are measurements in glacial ice. Finally chemical modelling of the troposphere and stratosphere, including heterogenous processes, is reviewed

Note: This volume contains the proceedings of the University of Miami Workshop on the subject of "Electronic Structure and Mechanisms for High Temperature Super conductivity". The workshop was held at the James L. Knight Physics Building on the campus of the University of Miami, Coral Gables, 3-9 January 1991. Some 106 scientists from 12 countries attended this workshop, most of whom presented either invited or contributed papers. The reader will find in this volume a series of papers discussing the most im portant experimental and theoretical developments as of winter/spring 1990/1991. Despite more than four years of intensive research on high-T materials, there has c been considerable controversy both with respect to the interpretation of experiment and even more so in connection with the construction of an appropriate theory. In this regard, workshops such as this, gathering scientists with many viewpoints, and varying specialization, and fostering constructive discussions, are important in the de velopment of a common ground. Of major concern in the present context were the basic physical processes involved in high-temperature superconductivity

Series Statement: Landmarks of world literature
Content: This study focuses on the Bible as a landmark of literature, showing both how it has influenced writers through the ages and how it in turn has been influenced by contemporary literature. It describes what is known about the historical context of the documents, the changes of interpretation they have undergone over the centuries, and the problems and influence of various translations, ranging from Tyndale to the Good News Bible.

Series Statement: Themes in the social sciences
Content: Defining lies as statements that are intended to deceive, this book considers the contexts in which people tell lies, how they are detected and sometimes exposed, and the consequences for the liars themselves, their dupes, and the wider society. The author provides examples from a number of cultures with distinctive religious and ethical traditions, and delineates domains where lying is the norm, domains that are ambiguous and the one domain (science) that requires truthtelling. He refers to experimental studies on children that show how, at an early age, they acquire the capactiy to lie and learn when it is appropriate to do so. He reviews how lying has been evaluated by moralists, examines why we do not regard novels as lies and relates the human capacity to lie to deceit among other animal species. He concludes that although there are, in all societies, good pragmatic reasons for not lying all the time, there are also strong reasons for lying some of the time
Content: 1. What is a lie? -- 2. Where lies are expected -- 3. Ambiguous domains -- 4. Science -- 5. Cultural diversity -- 6. Relations -- 7. Self-deception and connivance in deceit -- 8. Telling and detecting lies -- 9. Benign untruths: the discourse of fiction -- 10. Evaluations -- 11. Do we have to have lies?
