Es galt, den Fall der Berliner Mauer zu feiern und diese Feier am ersten Weihnachtsfeiertag 1989 in das Gedächtnis der Menschheit zu rücken. Die Ode an die Freiheit , wie Leonard Bernstein den Schlusssatz der Neunten Sinfonie Beethovens zu diesem Anlass singen ließ, sollte für viele Deutsche noch lange verknüpft sein mit einer bis dato kaum gekannten Freude. Kaum ein Veranstaltungsort schien zu diesem Anlass prädestinierter als der Berliner Gendarmenmarkt mit seinem Schiller-Denkmal vor der Frei(heits)treppe zu Schinkels Schauspielhaus. Das Konzert war, wie sein Biograf Humphrey Burton anmerkt, der absolute Höhepunkt im öffentlichen Leben des Weltbürgers Bernstein. Es ist ergreifend, das Ergebnis seiner Arbeit bei dieser Aufnahme zu hören, ihn in höchster Konzentration und gleichzeitiger Sanftheit und Heiterkeit zu sehen. Alle drei Chöre, die bei diesem Fanal der Freiheitsliebe und -sehnsucht agierten, alle mitwirkenden Musiker und Tausende von Zuhörern erlebten an diesem Tag viel mehr als nur ein Konzert, sie erlebten den allumfassenden Ruf nach Freiheit.
